A lining of silver, and A heart of gold: A Poetry Partners Collaboration

Recently, David, of The Skepticโ€™s Kaddish launched an initiative called, Poetry Partners. It is an amazing initiative, which invites poets to submit a poem, and then David writes a response poem. I contemplated a poem to send to David for some time, and then finally did about a month ago.

Here is the poem I sent to David.

a lining of silver

I sit atop a tower, looking down
at the flowers briar,
calling to me at all hours

it is
beauty
seen
in

the myriad contours and folds of lifeโ€™s road โ€”
gold

and shining in the afternoon sun,
watching from afar,
they run

frolicking in natureโ€™s bounty, like slivers
of dust, the night away,
they wash

as the
clouds hang
onto the love
they feel within

gathering
up our tears, a lining of silver
remains
thin

delivering back the tears collected,
delight spreads across the
land

as our tears seed
hope and love
inside
the

flowers briar once again

Now, here is Davidโ€™s poem in response to my poem.

A crystalline by ben Alexander of โ€˜The Skepticโ€™s Kaddishโ€™

An arrogant little man looked
out upon glowing sunflower fields.

If their lovely soul wouldnโ€™t bow,
heโ€™d simply be forced to Dehull her.

โ€œForward! Bring that fucking bitch to me!โ€
Soldiers marched, tanks rolled; rockets flew.

But the flowers resisted and stood
tall against the might of his troops.

โ€˜Grind them down!โ€™ he shouted, enraged,
โ€˜Press forward! We shall Extract our price!โ€™

Tears flowed forth from the flowers, but
they would not succumb to the Crude man.

Then, as though born of silver tears,
a Refined lady rose from their midst.

The train of her golden gown trailed
behind her, as she strode through the fields.

Thick clouds, hanging onto the love
they felt within, gathered up the tears.

โ€œTrue hope,โ€ the gentlewoman declared,
โ€œshanโ€™t be defeated by hubris.โ€

Deliberately, she stepped forward,
unfazed by the bullets, and beamed.

Thank you again to David for partnering with me on this amazing collaboration. What fun!

I would be honored if you would go here, and read the rest of my poem. Thank you!

The flowers brome…

I sat next to a flower once, bold and dared, growing through the ground, making its way into the ether air.

It perplexed me, in mid sentence, I stared, as a whisper came forth from the flowerโ€™s brome, hard to grasp in its block and form.

As the words mingled within me, and I stared at the petals mildly, I realized the words had taken on a life of their own, resonating within my heartโ€™s home.

What, you ask, did the flower say to me on that day?

โ€œGrow boldly, love fiercely, and, when in doubt, sit next to me here, and watch, listen, and learn; then, my friend, you will realize what love is all about.โ€

wish upon the birdsโ€ฆ

moon encrusted evening, walking among the fields
of daisies, birds circling in air, like thoughts
running through

veins,
fare and,
attention
made
bare

I dream of other lands, while grounded in the past,
and wish upon the birds, their beauty, at
times

misunderstoodโ€ฆ

slowly, I crane toward the sky, their look is a
glimpse of magnificence, we all
should

take into
account, and
be proud of the beauty
throughout

the moments given, each one is sacred, bestowed
upon us with a love that is
thrilling
and

delightful, just like the pink hues look, as they
swallow my past, and take me towards
the present moment

at
last
it is
a stark
contrastโ€ฆ

the flowers speak to me…

the flowers speak to me, through the trees, as
they caress the wind so lovingly, and
offer us a glimpse of what love
could beโ€ฆ

nature advances past circumstance,
a human mind, relegated to
the back

beyond chance, and
destinies untoward advance
of a love

talked about for ages,
lived by sages, and ordinary folks
of all stagesโ€ฆ

just like you and me, whispering through
the trees, past the winds, and to the
flowers kin, relating

the love
we feel withinโ€ฆ

the resonance wonโ€ฆ

I fell through the mirror once, and on the other side,
was you, hands clasped, and folded
neatly, you did always keep me
completely,
and
as

flowers fell from the sky, you gently made your way forward,
took my hand in yours, and then, the
question of my existence
spreadโ€ฆ

arising in mind, the answer flooding my heart, as love
blossomed like the sun, retiring me to your
awaiting arms

the resonance, now,
wonโ€ฆ

I hold a yellow petal

fight, fight,
fight, as the feelings
keep coming up,
a tirade that just wonโ€™t stopโ€ฆ

bleeding
from within,
associated
with a long ago, lost grinโ€ฆ

sans

the yellow petals
falling from the sky,
one at a time

making me
second guess, the minds
association
with the feelings
bubbling up, I stop

breathe in the aroma,
natures pandora, scent
from above, below my feet,
feeling beneath,
taking it all in

I almost feel freeโ€ฆ

close the eyes,
concentrate
on the arising tide,
detach from them,
one at a time

I remind

myself
of the love
all around,
as I bound, up, and over
all the feelings,
plaguing my dreamingโ€ฆ

lightness of being
is now
what Iโ€™m feeling, as

the mind clears
itself of these fantasies,
and I hold
a yellow petal close to me,
and give thanks

for now, Iโ€™m truly seeingโ€ฆ

My One Thing Last Saturday: Gardening

Photo by Kateryna Moskalova on Unsplash

Well, as Iโ€™ve written about before, last year, just before the pandemic really broke out here locally, I moved to the other side of this small town. And, as I began to get out a bit last summer, I realized that there was a very nice community garden right by a park that I frequented for walks, and at that time, runs.

Though there are many community gardens in Corvallis, I was unsure about securing one for this season. And? I did! I am quite excited.

Itโ€™s been a couple of years since Iโ€™ve belonged to a community garden. The Willamette Park Community Garden has only been in existence for about 5 years. The people that run the garden are super cool, and the spot I got is also super cool.

Here is a pic of the garden plot after Justin and I did some work this past Saturday.

Corvallis, Oregon 2021

As you can see there are three phases to the plot. The first phase is closest to us in the picture, and is the area that Justin and I worked Saturday. The second phase, which Iโ€™ll begin on in about 2 weeks, is covered with cardboard and mulch, and the third phase is just to the right of that, covered for now with only cardboard.

I will likely begin putting seeds and starts in the ground in the first phase this weekend. What veggies, you ask? Good questions. Here is an example of a planting schedule for this area.

Corvallis, OR 2021

Itโ€™s always interesting to visualize what the garden might look like in three months. I definitely have a vision of it with walkways and veggie sections coordinated by their growing season. Fun.

Here is a garden plot template, which is kind of fun.

There are many vegetables and spices I enjoy that are not on this template, yet it does give you an idea of how you can organize a garden space.

Alright, that was my one thing last Saturday. Getting my garden plot ready to plant.

I already have an idea for another installment of My One Thing. Remember the guitar I bought? Well, I can now play 6 or 7 chords, and can also play the intro to one of my new favorite songs. Yes, super fun!

A meadow landscape,
Flower, just like a skyscraper.
Bee alights, then night.
Snap a picture with my mind,
Hold it for the rest of life.
