a heart filled to the brim

Photo by todd kent on Unsplash

heart
beating fast,
faster,
and then faster,
slowing down
not an option,
nor is the feeling
in my gut, protracted,
and put back
together again,
without much in the way
of a knowing,
as our beautiful sun
keeps glowing

without protection,
breeze blows me
one way,
and then another,
reelingโ€ฆ

and,
then,
Iโ€™m feeling,

light and heavy
all at the same
time,
is this a paradox
in healing, or
is there
something else here,
and Iโ€™m just not sensitive
enough
to know itโ€™s presence
within my heartโ€™s beating?

breathing,
a memory,
a hint of something
in store,
stirs me from the floor,
and all at once,
I feel for

everyone,
and everything
weโ€™ve called our home
since timeโ€™s
memory came
into
my very core

notice not coming,
and,
deep down,
the shift
in awareness
creates contemplation
once more

a sigh,
a smile, and,
the revelation
creates continuity
in being,

breathing
the awareness in,
I take all of life within,
and seal this day
with a silent prayer,
and a heart
filled to the brim

heart and mind become one

Photo by Oliver Hihn on Unsplash

as the leaf falls
from the tree,
and tumbles
end over end
towards the earth,
Iโ€™m reminded,
of love, and
loss, and
all the things
in life we hold close
to heart and wish to
never depart.

yet,
we know all things
are fleeting,
even this feeling
I have, as Iโ€™m writing
this poem,
sitting, and
whimsically
staring at the screen,
as one word
appears, and then
another,
and then they disappear
from heart, and
mind, one
after the other,

and then?

another
feeling and
knowing comes,
and heart and mind
become one
.

Shining Heart

Photo by Erik Witsoe on Unsplash

watching life
move by, disengaged
as it rattles around
in my brain
without significance
or a way to rebound

detached
from reality,
like a kite that loses
itโ€™s tether,
and flies off into
space with nary a
tarry nor a sound,
not heard, and never found

reflective processes
go unnoticed,
buried deep in
the heart, without
a tool to unearth
the myriad of possibilities
that live for a rebirth

then,

a shift
in consciousness
comes calling,
releasing the pain
a little at a time

and,

new tools
are brought forth,
provided by people
just like
you and me,
whoโ€™ve already
dug deep
removing the layers
of debris,
shining heart
we can now see

Our Hearts Guide

Photo by jae bano on Unsplash

as the ground
cracks
beneath me, Iโ€™m
reminded,
of the fissures
running along
the entirety of
my being.

cracks that,
at times,
become craters,
wide, with unknown
depths,
just like the earthly
realm we see, full
of paths on land,
and under the sea.

cracks
and craters
stepped,
and leapt, over,
Iโ€™m now moving
beyond times measure.

unknown distance
from the center,
and yes,
hard to measure.

scraping
and clawing
our way into that
center, is
of utmost pleasure,

and pain, both.

yet,
what other way
would we have it?

inside the depths
of those fissures
lies the heart
of another life
lived, discarded,
and now, intentionally
picked back up for progression.

moving again,
in synchronicity,
as we glide,
we will abide,
and once again follow
our hearts guide.

breathe, then, breathe again

Photo by Mishal Ibrahim on Unsplash

how does it feel deep
inside when a line
breaks, again, and again,
through time?

breaking uncontrollable,
solace not found
only rebounded
from past to present
and never protected.

holding the pieces
of my being together,
with all the muster
that I can gather.

tears a flood,
body racked with remorse
of another time,
soul cracking
from the inside out,

without,

letting me know
the reason
for all of my doubts.

and just then?

breathe,
then,
breathe
again.

it happens,
just
as it is supposed to,
even when we try
really hard to
force the issue.

breathe,
then,
breathe
again.

itโ€™s not ours to hold
alone,
even though
thatโ€™s what
weโ€™ve been told.

mystery
meets conjecture
through the turbulent
weather and storms
of centuries
of nomenclature.

weโ€™re unbound
and limitless,
regardless of what
youโ€™ve been seeking,
and protecting
from the druthers
of all of lifeโ€™s pleasures.

breathe,
then,
breathe
again.

take solace in
yourself,
rejoice in the love
residing
in your heart,
which has been there
from the very start.

no need to guess,

simply
ask the question
to the One
who
has the access.

A Collective Magnitude

Photo by Daniel Olah on Unsplash

Fingers clutching,
gripping, and
ripping
at the pain,
tearing away, yet,
another piece of me
from the fray.

As they walk
along the edges
of my pain, I,
at times feel dismay, and
a growing sense of tame,
which was once only known
to me as shame.

I can taste the bitterness
of the pain endured,
and taught to me and you,
yet, for now, let us refrain.

We all learn to walk once,
and as age progresses, we
may learn to again
walk through
that door of obsessions.

A door once closed,
becomes a profound
sense of renewal,
just as a key lost
and now found,
opened the door

once more.

Heart fit the lock
just right, and
what came walking through,
sent me into
a love so cavernous,
itโ€™s all one can do
to simply
become ravenous
.

Filling oneself
on lifeโ€™s love,
jubilant and triumphant, and
all the while

humbled by gratitude
of a collective magnitude.

hearts fill again

Photo by Moritz Knรถringer on Unsplash

petals grasp
silence,
as the grass
grows taller,
and the weather fonder

a miracle of nature, and
beauty in simplicity,
without conjecture
or the need
for any grand gesture

just silence
and stillness,
amidst the chaos
and shrillness

being,
without thinking,
and living and loving
until our hearts are breaking

and,

inside this
brokenness,
lives the mystery
of all thatโ€™s
been promised us

a wholeness,
which lives
and breathes

thus,

remember,
my dear,
that brokenness
mends,
and hearts fill again

My Years

Photo by Clay Banks on Unsplash

Sitting,
I take in all of my
surroundings, intellectual
stimulating,
while the verse and song
pour forth
from every fiber of my being.

Anticipation
beckons me forward,
and I march to itโ€™s tune,
displaying a solitary shield
and armor,

while the masses
jumbled up
with preoccupations,
tarry,
without ever giving
a single
glance, mention, or merry.

Nonetheless,
I realize,
itโ€™s theirs to hold,
just as it is
mine
to behold,

the music
as it flows
from my heart
to their ears,
even when they
think theyโ€™ve missed
my years.

Bold

Photo by juan pablo rodriguez on Unsplash

Does language
ever really capture
the love we feel
completely?

Do stars
drop from the sky
and nestle us
with great surprise?

Pondering
these questions,
I think about the boys,
grown up so much now;
itโ€™s hard to believe
as I still see their shadow
in my rear view.

On different paths,
are they,
yet learning more,
they are,
about themselves,
and, yes,
everyone else
.

A miracle to behold,
is the gift
of being a father
to two young men
so bold.

They touch my heart
in so many ways,
at times,
itโ€™s impossible to impart
the fullness
of this beautiful gift,
especially when we are apart.

Be that as it may,
for today, itโ€™s enough
to know
that they live within,
and will stay there
forevermore.

28-5

Image credit; Victoria Strukovskaya @ Unsplash

I knock three times,
yes,
itโ€™s 28-5.
It seems Iโ€™ve got
that right, yet
thereโ€™s never an answer,
and I wonder
what might be the matter.

I pace
and think,
and think and pace,
clearing my mind
of all those escapes, and
preconceived ideas
of what Iโ€™m missing, while
staying present
to the glow thatโ€™s forth giving.

And, just then,
I hear someone
from behind the door,
calling someone
from beyond
the shore.

And yet,
no oneโ€™s there,
and I wonder
about all thatโ€™s fair,

as our

hearts
mingle in a dance
of inquiry,
hidden from view
behind
a barricade
of lifeโ€™s fullest and most
interesting mysteries.
